Smoke from the four fires to the north is still lingering in the region on Sunday Morning.
Forward progress has been stopped on the Moose Ridge Fire and it is being mopped up so we are down to three active regional fires.
Update Sunday, August 9, 2026 at 7pm. Two new fires have popped up north of Reno, the Fred Mountain Fire and the Ironwood Fire. How quickly things can change with wildfires in our area! Winds have been blowing wildfire smoke to the northeast from the 4 fires to the north of Reno. Two other fires, the Elephant Fire and Ironwood fire have been mostly contained and are deactivated in the Watch Duty app. A new fire, the Stallion Fire south of Pyramid Lake is already at over 1,000 acres. The Hunter Fire, the one closest to Reno and in the Mt Rose Wilderness Area, has been held to 7.6 acres.
This photo taken from New Washoe City at about 4pm shows a possible "blow up" of the fires to the north with a massive smoke cloud.
